OAHU'S NORTH SHORE

Celebrated for its sandy beaches, monstrous waves, and beautiful sunsets, this northern tip of Oahu remains relatively undeveloped. The drive along the western shore (through Makaha, Kaena, and Haleiwa) provides an introduction to the lesser-known rural character of Hawaii's most populated island. This is a good area from which to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center. A word of warning: Waters off the North Shore can be treacherous from October-April so, unless you're a genuine pro, utmost caution is advised.

Just north of Waimea Bay and 33 miles from Honolulu International Airport, this well-maintained cedar home is located on a gorgeous stretch of sandy beach next to the pro surfers' mecca, Pipeline.

Hosts have created a lovely one-bedroom apartment on the ground level of their home and have provided a number of thoughtful amenities for guests: a beachfront gazebo, outside shower, barbeque, beach chairs, books, games, and a video library. Full kitchen.

Great whale watching Feb-May; surfing championships Nov-Mar. $185/nt (sgl or dbl) when booking 3 nights or more; $195/nt for 2 nights; add $15 each add'l person. Sleeps 4. Min 2 nt. stay.

KA HALE HUNA

Located just above Waimea Bay, Ka Hale Huna is located in a quiet and secluded area in Pupukea. If you are looking for a private and isolated accommodation then you have found your paradise.

The hostess at Ka Hale Huna has perfectly pulled together a list of welcoming amenities for her guests: a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, a well-equipped kitchenette, air-conditioning, TV with Cable, VCR with an extensive video collection, not to mention the incredible views from your own private deck.

$100/nt $150 Security Deposit (refundable), $75 Cleaning Fee. Sleeps 2. Minimum 3-night stay. Welcome basket provided on arrival but no daily breakfast is served.
